Tools of the Trade
Quality additions to your professional kit that combine functionality with beauty to elevate your daily work.
Flart Wire Cutters
These petite, powerful, and comfortable in the hand wire cutters were given to me by a florist friend and became an instant favorite. The perfect little stocking stuffer with an odd name.
Dansko
This shoe has been my constant companion for my entire work life and continues to be the only shoe I want to wear during long work days. There is a reason that Danskos are the go-to shoe of the medical field and food service industry, and I think florists should consider that our work is similarly taxing on the body. Ours is a physically demanding profession with long hours that requires lots of time on foot.
Dansko clogs are known for their fatigue-reducing cushioned foot beds, arch support, and overall comfort. The closed toe protects when a floral knife or clippers accidentally drop, and slip resistant soles help keep us upright when waist deep in floral debris or while harvesting. One pair of Danskos will last for years and years, and just get more comfortable over time, making them a wise investment in your foot health and overall well-being.
Yuma Plant Stake
This charming handmade ceramic plant stake made by Bergs Potter is an artful upgrade from ordinary bamboo. A thoughtful gift for any plant parent.
Leland Gal x Sweetwater Bachelor Buttons Moon Ditty Bag
I love this flowery collection of vegan leather bags; a collaboration between two powerhouse Michigan artists, Maggie Mielczarek of Leland Gal and Kalin Shieck of Sweetwater Floral. Everyone could use one ( or several ) of these cheerful storage bags.
Vessels & Display
Offer new ways to showcase your botanical creativity with innovative everyday solutions and artisanal showpieces.
Cyrc Design Vases
I gasped when I saw this line of modern, sculptural, functional art objects for the home. Rooted in sustainability and circular design principles, Cyrc vases, designed and created in Montreal, Canada, are a new obsession.
These vases are beautiful enough to be displayed and enjoyed on their own, or with just a few casually placed flowers; but their unique design features are also incredibly inspiring to more experienced designers. The “Absalon” and “Augustus” vases are currently en route to my studio, and I can’t wait to experiment with their unique, layered design features.
Base Vase
This innovative, creativity sparking product turns any taper candle holder into a sleek bud vase. A thoughtful, versatile gift for professional florists and home designers alike.
Oh Flora Clover Vase
Beautifully crafted, ethically made, and designed with care, the Oh Floral Collection of ceramics by floral designer Tanya Barbariol are modern day heirlooms that are meant to be used. I especially love the elegant form of these clover vases.
Noe Kuremoto Ceramics
London based fine art ceramicist Noe Kuremoto thoughtfully and skillfully hand builds each exquisite piece. I am lucky enough to own several, including the ‘Moon vase” and they are as durable as they are beautiful.
The Met x Anthropologie Tree Topper
Part of a collaborative collection of Art Nouveau pieces created by storied art institution The Met and the well-loved home decor outlet, Anthropologie. I love the poppy motif and elegant style of this floral tree topper.
Books & Inspiration
Fresh perspectives and timeless wisdom to expand your floral knowledge and spark creativity in studio and garden.
Home In Bloom
The latest beautiful book from author and floral legend, Ariella Chezar. Perfect for every kind of flower and nature lover and for those who delight in details.
The New Art of Paper Flowers
I am thrilled to finally hold this beautiful book by my talented friend, paper floral artist Quynh Nguyen in my hands! The perfect gift for any flower lover.
Flowers For All
My latest book offers accessible and creative floral design ideas for everyone, regardless of experience. Full of beautiful photography and easy-to-follow instructions, I believe it’s a delightful addition to any flower lover’s library.
The Art of Wearable Flowers
An exploration of floral artistry, this book is perfect for anyone interested in creating unique, wearable flower arrangements. It’s as much an inspiration as it is a practical guide for floral enthusiasts and designers.
Wonder of the Woodlands
This beautiful book is the latest by the talented Françoise Weeks. One of my first mentors and role models, I credit Françoise with opening up my eyes to the possibilities that nature offers. As the subtitle suggests, she has a unique gift of seeing and creating with nature, and through her teachings and example, I was encouraged to express my own unique point of view through the medium of flowers. The natural world is her paintbox, and in this welcoming new book, she offers insights on how to make art out of the treasures found outside each persons’ front door.
Tarot of Flowers Deck
This beautifully made tool for self discovery and reflection was lovingly created by floral artist and writer Jen Lagedrost Cavender of Nectar & Bloom and illustrated by her sister Liz Lagedrost. A thoughtful gift for all seekers.
Beautifying Botanicals
Plant-powered indulgences that bring the essence of flowers into daily life.
Kerosene Fragrances
I discovered Kerosene fragrances recently during a very fun impromptu shopping trip to jewel box perfume shop The Marie-Marie in Portland, Oregon. I am always on the hunt for the perfect scent, and have very specific characteristics I’m looking for. I love scents that smell elemental, uber natural and botanical, without overly sweet or soapy notes. “Copper Skies” is an evocative scent- creamy and smoky, that smells of warm spices and wood fire. The perfumer lists notes of amber, cedar, tobacco leaves, honeycomb, basil and cloves. I smell all of those things and also crisp fallen leaves, cardamom, and the wood stove of my youth. I think I love it because it actually smells of winter in my home state of Michigan..which makes sense now that I know this is also where the perfumer creates his magic.
The other scent I left The Marie Marie with is the fresh, zesty, exuberant “Summer of 84” scent. Now, this find was very meaningful for me as I have been searching for a true citrus scent since Dasein stopped making ( what I think should be considered ) its legendary citrusy scent “Summer”. I have sampled many citrus fragrances over the years, looking for one as true and bright as “Summer” was, and have found it in Kerosene’s “Summer of 84.” Perfumers often botch citrus scents by making them too sweet or artificially “citrus”, but this one is just right. It smells of a freshly zested grapefruit- the perfect sophisticated balance of sweet and bitter. Notes include: Grapefruit, lemon, bergamot, melon, white flowers, fresh water, and musk.
Mizu by M. Hainey Palo Santo Meditation Mist
M. Hainey is a wonderfully thoughtful fragrance and personal care product company grounded in curiosity and reverence for nature. They create their fragrances, candles, and perfumed hair oils by hand with ethically sourced, naturally derived ingredients. I am fond of several of their products, but my current favorite is their Palo Santo Meditation Mist. Soft, calming, with that wonderful characteristic sweet woodsy scent, this mist is a wonderful pick me up to have on hand. Mist yourself, your linens, or meditation space before you practice. With notes of cinnamon leaf, vetiver and vanilla, this Palo Santo blend is especially uplifting and inviting.
A bit more about M. Hainey’s thoughtful sourcing: Our Palo Santo is wild-harvested from our partner farm within Ecuador who are committed to sustainability and reforestation efforts. In the past 5 years, they have worked with local college students and volunteers, teaching them indigenous agriculture methods while planting over 11,000 new Palo Santo trees back into the coastal rainforests. The use of Palo Santo is an ancestral healing art, with roots in South American wisdom. Please use our products mindfully and with respect for the land and people where these rituals originate.
Dogwood and Fir
I’m so excited for my stylish and talented friends at Dogwood and Fir as they announce their new fragrance line. They are releasing two scents: Dark and Moody and Soft and Muted. The first is a rich scent that combines cardamom, smoky bourbon, plum, roasted cacao and creamy vanilla. As the scent settles, it reveals a deeper essence of worn leather, moody tobacco, oud and amber. Soft and Muted is a warm, delicate, yet complex blend of ylang ylang, cotton flower, frankincense, white musk, amber, spice, and palo santo. I can’t wait to wear them both!
Every Day Oil
This wonderfully scented lotion replacement is made with organic and wild harvested ingredients and is suited for every skin type and every body. I especially love the “Mainstay” formula made with palo santo, lavender, geranium, and clary sage, and the “Warm Feelings” formula made with bergamot, blood orange, and a hint of patchouli.
Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum
I’ve heard wonderful things about this brand for years, and am treating myself to this cult classic serum for my 50th birthday! A wonderful, lux botanical gift for anyone who enjoys a little self care; and who doesn’t?!
Urb Apothecary Artichoke Cacao Mask
Urb Apothecary is a women owned, plant powered clean skincare line that creates all manner of handcrafted healthy skin products. Each that I’ve tried smells incredible and feels restorative and gentle on the skin. My current favorite is their Artichoke Cacao mask. This treat for the skin smells good enough to eat and leaves my face feeling thoroughly clean, pleasantly tight, glassy-smooth, and refreshed.
From Urb Apothecary: Rich cacao delivers a potent dose of antioxidants to fight free radical damage, while artichoke leaf extract improves elasticity, refines pores, and boosts hydration. Amla brightens and rejuvenates, schisandra berry tones and smooths, and cucumber helps calm irritation. Together, they support collagen production and restore skin’s natural resilience, leaving your complexion firmer, softer, and visibly more radiant.
Urb Apothecary Lips Cheeks Tint
I also adore this silky, transparent swipe-on tint and use it as a final face-brightening step before walking out the door each day. Sustainably made with botanicals including alkanet root, ylang ylang, and palmarosa, this tint stick smells as wonderful as it looks on the skin. I always pause to take in the scent before putting it on!
Flowers for Your Closet
Botanical motifs meet thoughtful design in these wearable celebrations of floral beauty.
Hope for Flowers by Tracy Reese
Visionary clothing designer and sustainable fashion leader Tracy Reese creates cheerful, beautifully crafted garments filled with clever, flattering details in her Detroit based studio. As a long time fan, I have several of her pieces and especially love her floral prints. Her commitment to innovation, community, sustainability, and of course her designs, are incredibly inspiring.
Markimekko “Ihastuttava Unikko” Scarf
Soft, chic, and versatile, this silk scarf in the classic Marimekko Unikko pattern makes a gift anyone would love to receive.
Marimekko ‘Unikko’ Morning Gown
Is it just me, or do others find terry cloth bathrobes to be too heavy and too hot? I love this lighter take made of soft cotton and linen. Perfect for after the bath or for the day lounging that the holiday season brings.
Thistle & Bess “Language of Flowers” Pearl and Citrine Earrings
Created by Ann Arbor, Michigan small business owner and designer Diana Marsh, these lovely earrings are part of a larger collection of flower themed beauties. Diana was inspired by the Victorian language of flowers, and I love that the tenacious little chamomile represents ‘energy in adversity’.
From The Victorian Language of Flowers:
“Chamomile is an unassuming little plant: its flower is daisy-like and petite, its foliage light and feathery, its fragrance gentle. But what battles it fights, and how much stronger it is for the undertaking”
Reader Favorites Since 2023
These beloved picks from past year's guides continue to prove their worth in studio and garden alike, earning permanent places in our community's daily practice.
Clever Beast Solid Perfume
I have loved Clever Beast’s Tomato Vine solid perfume for years. Pocket-sized, travel ready, refillable, this zesty and fresh perfume with its neat little presentation makes the perfect stocking stuffer.
This season, I’m excited to try their newest perfume: Gin Forest. As a plant lover, I look for scents that smell natural, vegetal, herbal, and fresh, so I’m thinking Gin Forest will be a new favorite.
More from Clever Beast: A unisex woodland inspired scent with traditional gin botanicals with notes of juniper and soft, sweet Angelica paired with warm, resinous fir balsam and oak moss. In a travel friendly, swivel top compact with refillable tins, this fragrance exists in a creamy solid perfume base made from beeswax and meadow foam seed oil for easy blendability.
Wheeler Munroe Tool Belt
This may be the very best purchase I’ve ever made! My version of a “gucci bag.” I’ve had my Wheeler Munroe belt for over 10 years, and it just keeps getting better with age. It sits comfortably on the hip and holds all the essential florist tools. Treat yourself or a flower loving friend! I love the comfort and adjustability of the “garden belt” especially.
Meraki Shears
I am a floral knife lover, but always have these shears on hand ( I like the 6.7” blade length ) for tackling branches and tough, thick stems. I adore the color options and efficient, comfortable cutting capability.
Floral Genius Flower Frogs
I’m a longtime fan of these easy to use, durable round hairpin flower frogs. The looped structure of them makes for fast and frustration-free designing.
Dram Drinks
I love everything about this company, and had to include it for a second year! I’m always on the search for a bevvy that tastes “grown up” but without alcohol or sugar, and DRAM makes several delicious options. I’m especially fond of their mushroom cola made with adaptogenic mushrooms for immunity and brain health, their lightly caffeinated cardamom and black tea sparkling water, and their newest collection of sparkling waters infused with adaptogens, botanical essences and CBD.
